How to Plan a Photoshoot in Koh Samui: How I Bring an Idea to Life

Planning a photoshoot in Koh Samui starts with a feeling, not a location. I’m Anna, a photographer based on Koh Samui, working under the name ART.ANETKA. Before every shoot I work through the same seven steps: the feeling, the concept, the location, the styling, room for new ideas, a Plan B and a gear check. This is how I bring a photoshoot idea to life.

If you are booking a session, this also shows what to expect and how you can help shape your own shoot. A short version of this guide is also on Instagram.

1. Start with a feeling

Before I choose a location or an outfit, I think about the person in front of my camera. What do we want to express? Softness, boldness or playfulness? The answer shapes every other decision, from the light to the colours to the way we move during the shoot. If you are not sure yet, that is fine. A few words about how you want to feel in the photos is a good place to start.

2. Build the concept

Next I bring together the location, mood, light and styling into one idea. References help me shape it, and they can come from anywhere: other photography, films or even celebrity looks. If you already have a specific image in your head, send it to me. For shoots built entirely around one idea, see my art photoshoots, where I design the concept, costume and light.

3. Choose the location

I look for places that fit the concept. When possible, I visit beforehand to explore the light and find my angles. Koh Samui gives a lot to work with: beaches, granite boulders, jungle and villa terraces. A spot that matches the idea makes the photos feel intentional.

4. Plan the styling

I help choose outfits that fit the mood, then match each look to the location and the shots I have in mind. We plan the order of looks in advance so each one gets enough shooting time. This is part of every solo and portrait photoshoot in Koh Samui.

5. Leave room for new ideas

I plan every shoot and gather references, but new ideas often appear on location. Sometimes they are better than anything I imagined, inspired by the moment and the connection with the person in front of my camera. The plan gives us a solid base, and the moment gives us the unexpected frame.

6. Always have a Plan B

I check the weather and consider a backup location, so I can adapt if plans change and keep creating. On Koh Samui this matters, because October and November are usually the wettest months of the year. A weather-related cancellation is rescheduled to the next available date at no cost.

7. Check the gear

Before every shoot I charge my batteries, back up my photos, format the memory cards and make sure everything works properly. It is simple, but it lets me stay fully present with you during the session instead of worrying about equipment.

Plan your own photoshoot with me

When you book a session, we go through these same steps together: you choose the feeling and send any references, and I help with the concept, location, styling and the Plan B. See solo and portrait photoshoots, couple and family photoshoots or wedding photography in Koh Samui, or message me on WhatsApp to check dates.
